Summary
How do you want to feel today?
In 2041, the choice is yours.
San Francisco is deserted, the Bay Bridge bombed, and the BART subway trains grounded. The Guardians, members of an elite and mysterious government-appointed military police force, are maintaining order at all costs—thanks to emotion-altering drugs like Emovere that suppress fear and anxiety. Lex Knightley, daughter of a prominent forensic psychiatrist, risks entering the devastated city to partner with the Resistance, a group of rebels intent upon exposing the dangers of Emovere. Lex discovers an ally in Quin McAllister, a magnetic Guardian Force recruit with a haunting past that binds them together. As she uncovers the secrets of the Guardian Force and confronts the truth about her family, Lex begins to realize that even those closest to her are not quite who they seem.

Review
Cover Thoughts-
It's a bit plain for my tastes, but I enjoy the background that everyone recognizes as the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. I love how the color gives off the desolation feel that one would expect from most dystopias.
First Thought-
First off, dystopia is my favorite genre. Furthermore, I am very critical of it. I am also in the processes of getting a degree in forensic science. So, when I see that this YA novel has a forensic psychiatrist in it, I am immediately interested.

Review-
Legacy did not disappoint. Ellery Kane begins the novel with Lex Knightly starting her dangerous trip across the bridge to deliver a flash drive of information to the rebels. She beautifully switches from present to past explaining how Lex got there, and how her mother is the person who began this devastation. I was not at all expecting what happened next. Usually while I'm reading I can come up with my own theories of how the characters resolve their broken societies. Legacy was something different. It is enjoyable because it is original. The characters are easy to follow and empathize with, well except for Quinn. I really wanted to punch Quinn sometimes. Quinn's character was almost unbelievable for me. Some of his actions were ones I couldn't see happening in real life. Most of the parts of the book were page turners. I couldn't set it down until the 3rd part of the novel. There was a lull where Lex, Quinn, and their rag-tag group of rebels stay in Lex's house admiring or hating Lex's mother. The best part about the book is learning about the different emotion-altering drugs. Listen, I'm no druggie but I wouldn't mind trying them. Well... maybe not the one that turns me into a heartless super soldier. Legacy makes me feel like this could happen in real life. It could be more than fantasy. It isn't an end with aliens or zombies. This is a powerful drug being abused by the government. Even the ending is great... in a sad way. It has one of those sacrificial endings you don't see coming. This is what I like in a novel. It took me on an original journey through my imagination of what is bravery and what is not.

Overall Readability-
If you enjoyed dystopians such as The 5th Wave, Ash Fall, or Eve, then I know you would enjoy Legacy. All of these novels have a lead character trying to make it through a situation on their own and then finding support in the end.

My Final Thought-
I have to know more! Is it really over? No more super soldiers? Unfortunately, I have to wait awhile until the second one comes out.

Emotion Altering Medications
By: Ellery A. Kane
Imagine a world where your emotions are entirely within your control. Want to be fearless? Bold? Excited? Joyous? Euphoric? In 2041, the choice is yours.
In creating the world of Legacy, I was inspired by my “real” job as a psychologist, where I am often face to face with individuals who are eager to change their emotional state. Just as Lex observes—“It seemed that almost everyone was eager to feel or not to feel something”—words that are as true today as ever. For many years, pharmaceutical companies have been cashing in on our desire to quickly and easily alter our emotions, so it wasn’t a stretch to imagine Zenigenic, an up and coming pharmaceutical company, creating a line of Emotional Altering Medications (EAMs).
In 2041, EAMs are widely available, dispended in vending machines operated by biometric identification; mental illness is not a prerequisite, only a desire to alter one’s feelings. With a catchy slogan, “How do you want to feel today?” and a promise of no side effects, who could resist?
So, step right up and consider your options, but remember, a quick fix always comes at a price.
Emovere: Developed by Dr. Knightley for Zenigenic, an up and coming pharmaceutical company based in San Francisco; targets the brain’s amygdala; intended to reduce fear and suppress anxiety.
Euphoractamine (“Eupho”): A popular pill that induces feelings of intense pleasure or euphoria.
Agitor: A particularly potent drug for enhancing stimulation and excitement.
Substance X (“Onyx”): Impairs the supramarginal gyrus inhibiting empathy; not for public consumption, use with caution.
Crim-X: A first generation emotion-altering drug, developed by Dr. Victoria Knightley for use with high-risk criminals; intended to reduce crime by suppressing emotions like anger and excitement; research trials were a failure, and the project was abandoned.
How do you want to feel? Remember, the choice is yours…
I hope you’ll check out Legacy! I’d love to hear your thoughts about the book. I can be reached at ellerykane@outlook.com or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheLegacybooks.

The Queen's Gift Excerpt #3

As I stepped inside the room, I felt eyes burning through the back of my sweatshirt. Was it too much to hope that it was Michael Cooper? I looked back. A Goth Fey was leaning against the far wall in the hall. His flame red hair, thick black eyeliner, and spiked choker clashed with the conservative uniform he wore. I hadn’t noticed him when we’d passed the Fey group earlier and he was hard to miss.
I elbowed Karen and casually nodded in his direction. “Thought you said all the Fey hung out together.”
She followed my gaze and paled to lemon yellow. “That’s Akio Takahashi.”
“Akio?”
“Yes, but he goes by Spider because he doesn’t want anyone to know that his father is a member of the Assembly. I think he’s embarrassed by it,” she whispered, then leaned closer. “It’s not really a secret. Everyone knows, but it’s easier to pretend that we don’t.”
He didn’t look like any of the spiders I’d seen in Illinois. “Spider, seriously?”
“Yep, no one calls him Akio except his father and close friends. But most of them call him Spider, too.” Karen hesitated. “I’d never call him by his given name. And you shouldn’t either.”
“Okay...” I didn’t get what the big deal was about his name. Tokyo didn’t have a corner on the market for weird names. There’d been plenty of strange ones at my last school. “Why is he staring at me?” Was this an ‘offend one Fey, offend them all’ kind of school?
“Who knows?” Karen shrugged. “Spider kind of does his own thing. He’s weird, even for a Fey, but I’ve heard his glam punk band rocks.”
My head tingled as I tore my gaze away. “He’s in a band?” I’d never known anybody who was in a real band. I’d only been around the marching kind.
Karen nodded. “They play around town sometimes. He’s the lead singer. I haven’t seen them, but I’ve heard Spider kills it on stage. To be honest, I don’t know him well, which I think is a good thing. He keeps to himself. And if you have any sense, you’ll give him plenty of space. You know how the Fey can be.” She rolled her eyes and flashed those dagger sharp teeth.
This from a Ghoul.

Where Dead Bodies Lie by Kat Cazanav Book Review and Blog Tour

Title: Where Dead Bodies Lie
Author: Kat Cazanav
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Romance
Source: ebook
Pages: 254
Publication Date: December 16th, 2014
Amazon Summary
For as long as I can remember, I have been told to follow three important rules:
1. Always guard my ability
2. Never share my secret
3. And pretend to be normal.
However, those three little rules don’t make my life easier. I still find dead people and deal with strange visions. Not to mention, an attraction to a boy who doesn’t exist. Whenever we cross path’s he mists away like smoke on a mirror. He drives me crazy, that Kaff Cooper.
As a flock of dead crows fall from the blackened sky, Kaff becomes the only one who can see the truth straight to the dark underbelly of who I actually am.
My hands feel the pull to extract the forsaken, the lost, the forgotten. It comes as naturally as breathing and there is no stopping it.
Review

Cover Thoughts-
I really like the ghostly feeling it gives you when you first look at it. It's an eye catcher. Although, the girl on the cover is not how I pictured Ella to look like. Partnered with the summary I am instantly interested to read this book.

First Thought-
I read a lot of YA Paranormal Romance, and I have never heard of body dowsing. I've read everything from vampires and werewolves to witches and fae, but I have never even considered the idea of Body Dowsers or Water Witches. I am the type of reader who strives to read something uncommon or novels with characters considered not mainstream. This novel screams at me to pick it up and read it.

Review-
I believe my favorite part of the novel was the originality. I haven't read anything like this before. There was a lot that I was not expecting. It was really hard to put information together sometimes, and because of that I read it in one night. I had to get to the bottom of who Kaff was. Who he really is will blow your mind. I almost didn't believe it. There are so many twists and turns. Honestly, if I was in Ella's shoes there is no way that I would go back to the school that bullied me. Realistically speaking she could have got into college without going back to that nameless town in the middle of nowhere. Even though the book doesn't say it, I believe that there had to be a small part of her that wanted to go back. It wasn't just her destiny. She knew from the beginning that Kaff is important to her even if she blames him for ending her stay at the boarding school. Reading Where Dead Bodies Lie is one of those novels you can think deeply about and find whats beneath the surface. I really wish that there was more information regarding the world that Ella is pulling spirits from. I still have no idea how the ending could have happened. I was left with a bunch of questions, but I'm eagerly waiting for the next in the series.
Overall Readability-
This is a great novel to get if you enjoy original YA Paranormal Romance. I know sometimes vampires and werewolves can get repetitive but this novel was something new and exciting. After reading Where Dead Bodies Lie I did a lot of research about Body Dowsing and it inspired me to look into something new.
My Final Thought-
Did not see that ending coming at all. HOW!!!! I have so many unanswered questions. Will they be addressed in the next novel? I hope so.

Review

Cover Thoughts-
This is one of my favorite covers. Something about it feels so ethereal. Even though you aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover I'm drawn to it, and I knew just from looking at it that I would love it.

First Thought-
The blurb gives off no hint to what the book actually has in store for you. Looking at the cover I think i'm in for something magical and the blurb doesn't really give me the whole affect. I had no idea what to expect from this novel.

Review-
The first part of the novel explains why Alison needs to be invisible. Immediately I was sucked into her story of being adopted and not truly knowing who she is. All she knows is that she needs to stay invisible and unnoticed by everyone to keep her family safe. Alison has a very strong, special talent that no else seems to have. She is a thoughtmaker. In the beginning, you learn that she originates from the people of Atlantis by a strange encounter. From that moment on she transforms from the outgoing popular girl into blending in the shadows. Further in the story she meets people liker her, and begins to crush on the handsome Ian Palmer. No longer can she stay unnoticed when Ian is determined to be with her. They call themselves the dewing. She finally finds people like her who don't want to hurt her or her family. Unfortunately, there's a traitor among them who reports finding her to the evil Sebastian. Alison has to take revenge for her mother and learns that being dewing has its downsides and its benefits. Being dewing means you have perfect memory, your own special ability (like being a thoughtmaker), and are able to fight with your energy. One of the most interesting things that the dewing do is called being likenessed. It is being bonded eternally. Atlantis Rising has romance, action, and adventure. Some bonds are broken and some are made. Atlantis Rising is very original paranormal idea. I always strive to read or discover something new and this was it. I never heard of the dewing or read anything like this, and I can't wait to read more.

Overall Readability-
If you enjoy a good young adult paranormal romance, this is a good choice. It's a fantastic page turner. and easy to empathize with every character. And... it's original, meaning none of your typical vampire, werewolf, witch, fae stuff. The feeling of this novel reminds me alot of popular paranormal series Paranormalcy. The characters are lovable and unique. It has everything you would need in a teen paranormal romance.

My Final Thought-
I really hope this novel is to become part of a series. I want to learn more about the dewing and the adventures Alison has to face.

A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.
Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.
Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.
